Ammolite is an organic gemstone and a very soft gemstone. It is a very rare stone as well. There are very few locations in the world like Canada and North USA, where we find bulk deposits of Ammolite. 

As it’s already mentioned that Ammolite is a very soft gemstone with hardness around 3.5 to 4. There is a very thin layer of Ammolite on this gemstone and the rest back side is known as Mother of Ammolite . 

When we try to cut or set this gemstone, we do not remove the back side due to this thin (0.5 mm to 0.8 mm) layer of Ammolite. As the layer is very thin, it can easily get broken if we try to remove it.  Ammolite is also known as ‘Gem Ammonite’ or Buffalo Stone. 

When we cut this stone, we use some liquor or some resin transparent epoxy on it, which helps us to cut this gemstone easily. This epoxy also protects the gemstone as this stone can also be damaged by nature as well.

Ammolite is a multi-color gemstone and most of the colors are Red, Orange, Green and Blue. Due to organic structure of the Ammolite, you can see different color at different angle of this stone.
